    Typical timescale

A purchase usually takes 12 to 16 weeks from instruction to completion. A sale takes about the same, and depends on the buyer. Chains, council search times, leasehold packs and mortgage valuations are the usual reasons it runs longer.

The key stages are: instruct and ID, contract pack, searches, enquiries, report on title, exchange, completion and registration. See each stage with its timing.

Remortgages usually take 2 to 4 weeks.

The people are Imogen Harrow and Callum Penn (solicitors, partners), and Aisha Rahman (Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives). A partner signs off every report on title. See the team and their qualifications.
