Whaup hut

Whaup is the old Border word for the curlew, and you will hear them calling from here on spring and summer evenings. A double bed sits at one end; at the other, a child-sized bunk with its own reading light and a curtain, so the grown-ups can stay up. Whaup stands highest on the hill, so it gets the widest view of the sky.

The hot tub

Wood-fired, slow, and entirely yours.

Each hut has its own tub on its own terrace. A stove at one end heats the water, so there is no pump noise and no electric hum, only the crackle of the fire and whatever the moor is doing.

  • Light it about two hours before you want it. It settles at 38 to 40°C
  • Logs and kindling are included, and we show you the long tongs at check-in
  • Fresh, filtered water for every stay, with a lid to keep the heat in
  • Twenty to thirty minutes at a time, with water to drink, and no glass near the tub

Fire safety, plainly

Every hut has a guarded wood-burner, a carbon monoxide alarm, a smoke alarm, a fire blanket and an extinguisher. The tub fire is outdoors, in a closed stove. We walk you through it, and never leave a fire unattended.

A stack of logs burning brightly against a dark night
Birch off-cuts from a sawmill down the valley
Glowing embers and charred logs in a steel fire bowl, a tent glowing in the background
Embers at the end of the night
