Questions
Everything you would ask before booking.
Booking, arriving, hot tubs, dogs, weather and access. If it is not here, call us.
Booking and paying
How much is the deposit, and when is the balance due?
A quarter (25%) of the total price secures your nights. The balance is due six weeks before you arrive. If you book within six weeks of arrival, the full amount is due at booking.
Are there any extra fees?
No. The price you see includes VAT, hot-tub logs, bed linen, towels and cleaning. There is no booking fee and no card fee. The only add-on is £20 for a dog, for the whole stay, in Merlin hut.
Why book direct instead of through a platform?
Booking platforms add a service fee for guests, often around 15%. We do not, and we show the same nightly price as everywhere else. You also deal with the people who will meet you, can move dates with a phone call, and we put the saving into logs, not commission.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than six weeks before arrival, your deposit is refunded in full. Between two and six weeks, we keep the deposit, or you can move to another date once, free. Under two weeks, there is no refund, but we will try to re-let your nights and refund what we recover. If we have to close for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date. We suggest travel insurance.
Can I change my dates?
Yes, once, free, up to 14 days before arrival, subject to the hut being free on the new dates.
Do you sell gift vouchers?
Yes, from £50, valid for 12 months. Email us and we will send one the same day.
Arriving
What time are check-in and check-out?
Check-in is from 3pm to 8pm and check-out is by 11am. If you will be later than 8pm, call us and we will leave the lamp on and the key on the hook.
How do I find you?
The postcode takes you to the farm gate. From there, follow the stone track for 1.2 miles to the huts. Any car manages the track in dry weather, though a low car should go slowly. Mobile signal is patchy, so download the directions before you set off.
Is there Wi-Fi or mobile signal?
Signal is patchy. There is no Wi-Fi in the huts, by choice. A spot by the farmhouse porch has Wi-Fi if you need it for something urgent.
Where is the nearest shop?
Kielder village has a small shop and café about 20 minutes away. Bigger supermarkets are in Hexham, around an hour. Bring dinner for the first night. We leave milk, tea, coffee and farm eggs for your first morning.
Can I get here without a car?
Not easily. The nearest station is Hexham, about an hour away by taxi. Call us and we will give you the number of a driver we trust.
The huts and the hot tubs
How does the wood-fired hot tub work?
A small stove at one end heats the water. Light it about two hours before you want it and it settles at 38 to 40°C. Logs and kindling are included, and we show you at check-in how to light it, feed it and use the long tongs. Water is fresh for every stay.
Is the hot tub safe for children?
Children must be with an adult at all times. Keep sessions to 20 to 30 minutes, take water to drink, and keep glass away from the tub. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition, ask your doctor before using a hot tub.
How are the huts heated?
Each hut has a wood-burner and an electric radiator, so you will not be cold at 3am if the fire goes out. The Bothy has electric heating throughout.
Is there a toilet and shower?
Yes. Curlew, Merlin and Whaup each have a compact en-suite with a hot shower and flush toilet. The Bothy has a full bathroom with a bath and shower.
Dogs
Can I bring my dog?
One dog is welcome in Merlin hut only, for £20 for the stay. It has a fenced paddock, a bowl, towels and a bed. Please keep your dog on a lead on the farm and never leave it alone in the hut. During lambing, from March to May, we ask you to keep to the paths away from the ewes.
Why only one hut for dogs?
So the other huts can stay dog-free for guests with allergies, and so the farm animals have a quieter hill. It is a choice we made on purpose.
Weather, safety and access
What if it is cloudy?
We cannot promise a clear sky. On average you will see good stars on a bit under half of nights, so a two-night stay gives you a fair chance. If it is cloudy, you still have a hot tub, a wood-burner and 600 acres of moor.
Is the wood-burner safe?
Every hut has a guarded stove, a carbon monoxide alarm, a smoke alarm, a fire blanket and an extinguisher. We show you how to use the stove at check-in. Please never leave a fire unattended, and put ash in the metal bucket by the door.
What happens in snow?
The farm track is not gritted. If snow is forecast, we will call you before you set off, and we can meet you at the farm gate in the 4x4. If the road is closed, you get a full refund or a new date.
Are the huts accessible?
Honestly, not for wheelchair users. The huts have three steps up to the door, the track is rough and the terraces are uneven. The Bothy has one step and a wider door, and is the best option if mobility is a worry. Call us to talk it through.
House rules
Six things we ask, so everyone gets the night they came for.
Keep it dark
No outdoor lights after dusk. Use the red torches. Curtains drawn when lights are on inside.
Quiet after 10pm
Voices low outdoors. Sound carries across the moor, and so does every hut’s night.
Fire only where provided
The wood-burner and the tub stove only. No open fires, fireworks, barbecues on decking or sky lanterns.
No smoking or vaping
Not inside any hut, and please not near the log store. Ash trays are by the car park.
Close the gates
There are sheep on the hill. Leave every gate as you found it, and keep dogs on a lead.
Leave no trace
Take your rubbish to the bins in the yard, and let us know of any damage so we can fix it quickly.
